XRF Screening for RoHS Compliance

XRF analyzers are used to determine the elemental makeup of tested materials, making them ideal for screening hazardous materials within electronics. XRF screening helps ensure electronics manufacturers meet compliance with global hazardous substance regulations and testing methods, such as the EU RoHS directive. This page includes resources that explain how XRF is used for RoHS compliance, as well as our selection of portable RoHS analyzers.

RoHS FAQs

What does RoHS compliant mean?

RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. It is a directive organized by the European Union (EU) that restricts the use of 10 hazardous substances in electronic and electrical equipment (EEE) to the reduce risks to human health and the environment from electronic waste. RoHS compliant means that a product does not exceed the allowable amounts of these restricted substances.

What substances are restricted under RoHS?

A RoHS specifies maximum levels for the following restricted substances: cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (CrVI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP).

What is a RoHS analyzer?

A RoHS analyzer is a portable XRF device used to test electronic and electrical materials to determine if they contain any of the substances restricted by the EU’s RoHS directive. XRF analyzers are an effective screening tool when testing for RoHS compliance, as they can quickly identify the presence of restricted substances in electronic equipment without damaging the product tested. XRF screening helps manufacturers, importers, and distributors of EEE sold in the EU market meet RoHS compliance.

Vanta screening

Vanta for Regulatory and Safety Screening

Vanta handheld XRF analyzers are used to ensure compliance with RoHS and local or international regulatory laws. Vanta analyzers provide on-the-spot chemical analysis of consumer products to quickly scan Pb, Cd, Hg, Cr, and Br.

Vanta Workstation

The Vanta Workstation

The portable Vanta Work Station is battery operated for testing on the go. A fully interlocked lid and 360-degree shielding make it convenient for bagged, prepped, and liquid samples or small objects, including jewelry and circuit boards. In this closed-beam setup, users operate the analyzer using Vanta PC software or the Vanta mobile app.
