Dr. Daniel Richter (PhD) is a professor of soil science and forest ecology at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment. Prof. Richter’s research focuses on long-term studies of soil life to gain insights into how to soil can be sustainably managed. His research approaches soil as a natural body that changes over time, rather than viewing it as inert and static. In particular he’s interested in how humans impact and are impacted by the soil ecosystem around them over the long-term. He is a specialist in urban soil lead toxicity, recently publishing a multidecade study of legacy lead in urban ecosystems.
