Olympus Introduces a Powerful Solution to Increase the Efficiency of Weld Inspections Using New Phased Array Probes and Software.

Olympus, a world leader in nondestructive testing technologies, has released a new phased array ultrasound solution developed to increase the efficiency of weld inspections. This Weld Inspection Solution comprises new phased array probes, new dual matrix array (DMA) probes, associated wedges, and improved versions of SetupBuilder and MXU 4.2 software for use with the OmniScan phased array flaw detector. The new phased array solution applies to the inspection of welds in plates and pipes made of materials ranging from carbon steel, austenitic, nickel, to other coarse grain corrosion-resistant alloys.

The new A31 and A32 Weld Series probes and wedges were developed to simplify and standardize weld inspections with fewer designs needed to cover a wide range of weld configurations. They improve signal-to-noise ratio and feature an ergonomic design for improved coupling. For inspection of welds up to 150 0C (300 0F), Olympus offers a new high-temperature wedge option compatible with the new Weld Series probes and the Olympus Mini-Wheel encoder.

The new dual matrix array (DMA) probes consist of two matrix array probes wired to the same connector with the capacity to perform transmit-receive longitudinal (TRL) sound beams. Available in 2.0 MHz and 4.0 MHz, they are particularly helpful when testing cladded pipes or highly attenuating materials where it is difficult to detect the return echo coming back from the internal wall of the part.

NDT SetupBuilder is a PC-based software program specifically designed for Olympus’ OmniScan flaw detector. It can be used to quickly and easily create inspection setups based on the configuration of the part to be inspected. This includes the DMA inspection setups with A17/A27 probes and standard wedges. A new feature in NDT SetupBuilder is the ability to perform compound scan beams. This innovative inspection strategy consists of a mix of sectorial and linear beams resulting in higher probability of detection, inspection of thicker materials, improved inspection speed, shorter setup and calibration time, and faster data analysis. This software version combined with the new MXU 4.2 OmniScan software brings many improvements allowing for faster scan speed and a more streamlined and accessible use of the instrument.

This new Weld Inspection Solution is yet another milestone in Olympus’ pioneer work in developing portable phased array ultrasound as a fast, reliable, and cost-effective method to monitor the integrity of welds. As a result of increased code-acceptance, phased array (PA) has gradually replaced radiography (RT) as a viable method to inspect welds in pressure vessels, tanks, pipes, and other configurations. This reduces or limits the complications of major safety and licensing issues from radiation, work disruptions, environmental and chemical wastes, large volumes of film, and film deterioration.
