Observation of the Rubber Surface Condition of New and Old Windshield Wiper Blades

Application

Windshield wipers are typically exposed to harsh conditions, such as wind and rain, strong ultraviolet rays, and dust. As consumable supplies, the wipers need to be replaced with new ones on a periodic basis. However, premature tears, cracks, deformation, hardening, and adherence of foreign objects can occur in the rubber portion of a wiper that comes into physical contact with the automotive glass pane. If such degradation occurs, the wiper will not perform the way it was intended, which is to completely remove extraneous matters from the glass pane.

The Olympus solution

The Olympus DSX110 digital microscope has several features that facilitate the inspection of the rubber surface condition of wipers. Its three types of dedicated objective lenses (1X, 3.6X, and 10X) help to control aberration and prevent uneven illumination. You can observe the sample at various magnification ranges and any angle thanks to its 16x optical zoom and free-angle function. The DSX110 microscope is also equipped with an extended focal image (EFI) function, which is effective for irregular parts such as the rubber portions of wipers. When imaging the sample while shifting the focus vertically, the software automatically composes fully focused images quickly and clearly with EFI. If the EFI function is used in combination with the free-angle function, a fully focused image of the rubber can be obtained not only on the upper surface but also in the side-to-side and oblique directions. This enables complete three-dimensional observation of the rubber surface condition, facilitating detection and analysis of defects following endurance testing.
