When fibers are woven into cloth, foreign matter might be mixed in and interwoven. Foreign matter must be identified in this process so that the source can be identified and future contamination can be prevented. However, once foreign matter is in the cloth, it becomes difficult to observe and identify using a microscope.

With Olympus' DSX digital microscope, you can switch to the best observation method for your application with a single click. When observing a fiber, such as in cloth, darkfield microscopy is especially effective, while polarization is useful to see foreign matter entangled in the fiber. With the multi-preview function, a list of microscope techniques, each of which is suitable for a particular surface condition, is provided when you select an item from the ‘conditions’ list, such as scratch, irregularity, or flat. This enables anyone to obtain similar results, regardless of whether the user is a beginner or microscope expert. When combined with the 3D and extended focal image (EFI) functions, woven fiber bundles with large irregularities or entangled foreign matter can be fully focused, enabling users to obtain clear images with depth.
