XRF Analysis FAQ

What does XRF mean?

XRF stands for X-ray fluorescence: a nondestructive, non-invasive technique that is used for elemental and material analysis.

Do you need to calibrate XRF analyzers?

Most users find the out-of-the-box calibration of Vanta™ XRF analyzers suitable for field analysis without any adjustment. The Axon Technology™ that powers each analyzer has shot-to-shot reproducibility over time and across a wide temperature range.

How to interpret XRF data?

Collecting data is only a small part of XRF testing and analysis—interpreting the data correctly is imperative if it is to be useful. For device-specific advice, including How To View Test Result Data for Vanta Handheld XRF Analyzers, visit our resources page.

Can XRF detect carbon?

A handheld XRF analyzer cannot measure elements that are lighter than magnesium on the periodic table—this includes carbon. If you need to quantify these light elements, another analytical method is needed.
