New techniques in the manufacture of ceramics have led to many new high-performance and heat resistant ceramics that have found increasing use in the automotive, aerospace, and electronic industries.
Most structural and electronic ceramic components are well suited for ultrasonic thickness gauging; they can generally be measured over a wide thickness range and with a great degree of precision. Ultrasonic gauges can be used to measure the thickness of structural ceramic products such as turbine blades, valves, and other engine components. Typical electronic ceramic components are capacitors and resistors.
Ultrasonic thickness measurements of ceramic coatings on a nonmagnetic surface is a typical application. Ultrasonics is also an ideal technique for the nondestructive detection of flaws, irregularities, and bond integrity in ceramic components.
We have available various high frequency pulser/receivers, transducers and a high frequency imaging system. Some of the potential areas in which the Multiscan System can be used include:
Detection of cracks in packages or carriers, voids in package seals and - in some cases - lead bonding to chips in microelectronic devices.
Detection of voids, inclusions, porosity and density variations in high strength ceramics such as silicon carbide, silicon nitride, boron nitride, and aluminum oxide.
Imaging very small surface cracks and irregularities in ceramic parts through the use of surface wave techniques.
Inspection of bond line integrity within ceramic or silicon parts.
Because of the wide variety of physical properties in ceramic materials, it is recommended that a sales engineer be consulted for final selection of instrumentation.
