1. Application

Today, lithium-ion batteries are used in various types of equipment, such as portable electronic equipment, electric vehicles, smart grids, and household electricity storage systems. The materials used for the collectors of the battery are aluminum foil for the positive electrode and copper foil for the negative electrode, and a mixed slurry containing an active material, a conductive agent and a binder is applied to these foils, which are then dried and pressed to create the electrodes. These collector materials may be required to have a good adhesion property when the slurry is applied.

2. The Olympus solution

Olympus' LEXT 3D scanning laser microscope can three-dimensionally capture the surface irregularities of the collector material with high resolution and in high definition. It also enables bright-field observation, not to mention the simultaneous acquisition of reflection information (intensity image) and height information (height image) from the sample in the same field of view, the most distinctive feature of a laser microscope. While observing the surface conditions of the material using both a clear intensity image and high-resolution height data, non-contact quantitative evaluation of the surface roughness is possible. It is also useful for visually observing the profile in 3D.
