XRF and XRD Analyzers

MESA 6000

Olympus Innov-X Mesa 6000 for measurements of light elements in oils, waste streams, and fuels.

The MESA-6000 Benchtop XRF System features patented diffractive optics technology for ultra high performance for a suite of low atomic number elements - Mg, Al, Si, P, S and Cl - in oils and other fluids. Wear metals and contaminants for power generation, transportation vehicles, and off-road heavy machinery.

The MESA 6000 is a specialized, compact XRF workstation that offers superior measurement of S, Cl, and other elements in petroleum-based products. MESA 6000 technology is based on the latest tube and detector technologies in Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and utilizing closely coupled monochromatic, polarized EDXRF analysis techniques. It was developed specially for Horiba's Scientific Elemental Analyzers Product Line utilizing Innov-X field-proven EDXRF technology that originated from on-board oil and fuel analysis specially built for the marine shipping industry.

Quick & Accurate

  • Typical test times are 3 minutes per sample for less than 50 ppm concentrations
  • Less than 2 minutes per sample for concentrations above 50 ppm
  • Detection limits for S and Cl are in the low ppm level with an upper range in the % level
  • Simultaneous multielement determination capability
  • New technology eliminates oxygen interference that can vary results significantly

Easy

  • Touchscreen graphical user interface displays all the important functions for routine operation at a glance
  • USB ports allow a supervisor to easily plug in a keyboard and mouse to handle more complex tasks

Clean

  • Unlike some methods for S and Cl, the MESA 6000 models are low maintenance and do not require furnaces, conversion gases or micro syringes

The MESA 6000 features a unique, patented design with a close-coupled, doubly curved HOPG X-ray optic. It simultaneously polarizes, focuses, and mono-chromates the X-ray beam. This yields the ideal X-ray source for measuring S, Cl and lower atomic number elements. This technique creates an environment with ultralow background similar to other optics-based X-ray analyzers, but retains the EDXRF benefit of allowing for simultaneous analysis of multiple elements.

With U.S. Federal and international regulations becoming increasingly stringent, the need to determine the sulfur content of petroleum oils and fuels is a critical issue. In crude oil, sulfur can be present in concentrations up to 5% by weight. The distalliation of fel products from these crde oils will produce products varying concentrations of sulfur. Hazardous air pollution is caused by sulfur oxides coming from the burning of sulfur containing fuels. In addition, there are harmful effects on engines, when they are being operated with fuels contaiing more sulfur than these permitted levels. it is therefore essential that sulfur concentrations be closely monitored and controlled in all petroleum products.

Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) is a well established technique for the analysis of sulfur in petroleum products. The analysis requirements for these techniques are established through international standards such as ASTM and ISO. The versatile MESA 6000 can be used in a wide range of applications for sulfur and chlorine in the range of 1 ppm to wt% levels. It automatically corrects for interferences coming from matrix differences or interfering elements.A variety of contemporarty petroleum products are measured with the MESA 6000:

  • Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) Straight Run Gasoline and RFG
  • Diesel Simultaneous elemental XRF analysis using the Mesa 6000
  • Kerosene/Jet Fuel
  • Biodiesel/Biodiesel Blends
  • Transformer Oil/Hydraulic Oil
  • Crude Oil
  • No. 2 Home Heating Oil

The MESA 6000 performance is compliant with ASTM and ISO International Sulfur Determination Norms:

  • ASTM D7220 [Updated Method with higher performance now available!]
  • ASTM D4294
  • IP 532
  • EN ISO 8754
  • EN ISO 13032
  • EN ISO 20847
