Theory and Practice TOFD

This one-week course is intended for conventional ultrasound testing inspectors and technicians. It is a comprehensive training that covers all aspects of nondestructive weld inspection using the ultrasound TOFD technique.

The course covers the theory behind the technique development, probe and wedge characteristics, how to setup the equipment, and how to calibrate it.

The presentation also includes hands-on exercises; therefore, we encourage participants to bring their equipment as much as possible. We also recommend that participants bring samples of parts, they are or will be inspecting, containing natural defects. This allows us to go over specific setups if time permits it.

At the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Select proper probes and wedges.
  • Setup and calibrate ultrasound TOFD equipment.
  • Find and evaluate indications welds.
  • Analyze inspection data and size defects.

Contents include:

  • Basic principles, scan types, and data view (display)
  • Theory, examples, and exercises
  • Probes and wedges
  • Scan plans and setup
  • Calibration (velocity, wedge delay, sensitivity)
  • Indication interpretation and defect sizing
  • ASME code requirements

At the end of the course, there is a review of the subjects covered followed by and exam.
