Manual and Encoded PA Weld

The advantages of improved defect detection, enhanced sizing capability and reduced inspection times offered by phased array ultrasonic techniques over conventional ultrasonic techniques are well recognised. This course meets the needs of inspection personnel requiring training and qualification to a recognised standard.

Content:

  • principles of phased array inspection;
  • principles of phased array probes and probe design
  • principles of and factors affecting inspection sensitivity;
  • phased array instrument;
  • focal law creation
  • instruments set-ups
  • data resolution and collection
  • linear and azimuthal scanning with phased array probes;
  • calibration and checks;
  • principles of data analysis;
  • software for data collection and data analysis;
  • familiarisation with analysis software
  • use of software tools for defect detection and sizing;
  • procedures for verification of flaw existence, position, characterisation and sizing
  • instruction development on welding inspection and reporting

Objectives:

  • to explain the theoretical background of phased array applications
  • to correctly select probe/wedge to examine welded butt joints
  • to calibrate and set up the phased array ultrasonic equipment
  • to locate and evaluate flaws in the weld body, HAZ, and parent metal lamination
  • to analyse scan data for location and size of defects in typical welded butt joints
  • to accurately report weld condition
  • to differentiate defects from geometric features
  • to compile a written instruction
  • to meet the syllabus requirements of CSWIP

Suitable for:
Experienced Level 2 qualified ultrasonic technicians looking to expand their knowledge and gain a qualification in manual and encoded phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT).

Certification:
This course will lead to an internationally recognised CSWIP certification, which is fully compliant with EN 473 and ISO 9712.

Duration:
15 days including exam: 10 days phased array only, 3 days analysis software, 2 days exam

Entry Requirements:
Course candidates must be qualified to a minimum of Level 2 Ultrasonic Testing (EN473/ISO9712), if they wish to take the Phased Array certification examination.

Additional Information:
Candidates with previous training in Phased Array UT may be eligible for a reduction of up to one third of the total training hours required for CSWIP certification. Candidates are to provide evidence of the training received: a certificate of attendance and a copy of the training syllabus BOTH authenticated by a senior responsible person in the candidates employing organisation or a major client.

This shall be passed to the relevant TWI Training Centre for approval at least two weeks prior to the scheduled course start date.
