Thickness Measurements of Fiberglass Plates, Pipes and Storage Tanks

Ultrasonic thickness gauges can be used for a variety of fiberglass applications. Fiberglass storage tanks and pipes, for example, need periodic thickness monitoring to assure that no erosion or delamination from corrosive chemicals has resulted. Other applications are electronic circuit boards, coil bobbins, and sporting equipment. Ultrasonic gauges can be used on many types of fiberglass: cloth, mat, roving, filament wound, or combinations of these.

Equipment: Selection of gauge and transducer mainly depends on the desired thickness range capability and quality of the composite material. The Model 35DL-HP covers the widest thickness range, from 0.050 to 3 in. (1.25 to 75 mm). Using a unique transducer design (M2008) and innovative signal processing electronics, the 35DLHP is capable of making thickness measurements in many difficult fiberglass applications. Other transducers such as the M1036 or M109 will be used for thicknesses under 0.50 in. (12.5 mm).

Products used for this application

35DL-HP

The pocket-sized 35DL-HP (High Penetration) is a handheld ultrasonic thickness gage for measurements on thick or sound-attenuating materials such as fiberglass, cast metal, and rubber. Using single element transducers. Same features as Model 35 but has internal datalogger.

38DL PLUS

The 38DL PLUS is an advanced ultrasonic thickness gage. Uses dual element transducer for internally corroded applications, features include THRU-COAT and Echo-to-Echo. Uses single element transducers for very precise thickness measurements of thin, very thick, or multilayer materials.
