Civil Infrastructure

Olympus products can be used to detect hidden cracking and corrosion in bridges, support beams, and railroad rails, and for visual inspection of otherwise inaccessible areas of bridges and buildings.

Ultrasonic Testing

Ultrasonic flaw detectors and phased array systems can be used to identify hidden and potentially dangerous cracking in bridge beams and hanger pins, as well as for construction weld inspection in steel beams and similar building structures. Railroad rails can be inspected for internal cracking by both manual and automated ultrasonic instruments. Ultrasonic corrosion gages can be used to measure remaining wall thickness of corroded beams and supports, as well as pipes and tanks.

Eddy Current Testing

As civil infrastructures around the world are aging, many opportunities arise for employing eddy current technology to assess the condition of these potentially critical structures. Eddy current instruments are used to inspect for cracking around fasteners on bridges and other infrastructure, while eddy currents are also used for detecting cracks in railroad rails and in the running gear of trains. While ultrasound is used to detect volumetric defects in these structure, eddy currents can be used for detecting surface and near surface defects that ultrasound sometimes finds difficult to detect.

Remote Visual Inspection

Remote Visual Inspection (RVI), using flexible or rigid instruments, is a
well-established inspection technique for checking plant and equipment without teardown and re-assembly. RVI applications in the building and construction industry are extensive, including air conditioning ducts, wall cavities, ventilation systems, ceiling, roof and floor voids, water tanks and pipes, and boiler flues. While RVI contributes to safety and pollution control, significant cost savings can also be achieved through increased plant efficiency, reduced maintenance and increased availability of equipment.
