Georgia Southern Univ Awarded Environmental Research & Discovery Grant

Olympus Innov-X awarded a Research & Discovery Grant to the Sociology & Anthropology Department at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. The awarded proposal, Analysis of Soil and the Corrosion Environment at Camp Lawton, is being directed by Principal Investigator & Graduate Student, Amanda Leigh Morrow.
Ms. Morrow states the following. "My research goal is to analyze the compositions of the soils at Magnolia Springs State Park and Bo Ginn National Fish Hatchery and compare the pH and chemical composition with the types of corrosion products present on the recovered artifacts from the Confederate prison, Camp Lawton." Her hypothesis is "that there is a demonstrated correlation between the corrosion environment and subsequent corrosion products formed and that this information is valuable context for an artifact's provenience."
Ms. Morrow states that her research is in partnership with Georgia Southern University, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and Georgia Department of Natural Resources. She plans to incorporate the results of her research into her Master's Thesis and to present her work at the 2012 Society for Historical Archaeology conference in Baltimore, Maryland.
Ms. Morrow is using an Olympus Innov-X handheld XRF configured with a silicon drift detector (SDD) and a powerful 4W tube to deliver fast and precise compositional analysis on a variety of materials, including metals, alloys, soil, wood, and fluids.

The new DELTA handheld XRF provides dramatically reduced testing times that allow hundreds more tests per day and significantly higher confidence allowing one to make immediate in-the-field decisions, maximizing any research and discovery budget.
DELTA analyzers offer cutting-edge electronics and X-ray technology, as well as innovative software features that make DELTA analyzers fast, user-friendly, and easy to operate. These analyzers are engineered for continual use, achieving thousands of tests per day in some applications, even in extreme environments. Every DELTA is engineered for rugged toughness AND analytical precision; there are no compromises!
